The category name Sonic the Hedgehog CD is confusing, since it contains no soundtrack whatsoever and was released solely as a CD-ROM. In addition to the game itself, the CD contained several Sonic-themed presentations and wallpapers.
There is also a Chinese version of Sonic CD, called Airen. However, it is only very loosely based on the original game and has a considerably different story.
The Sonic the Hedgehog Sega Master System game was supposed to be released in PAL regions as Sonic World, but due to a change in the PAL/NTSC trademark ruling, the game was released in Japan as Sonic the Hedgehog, since Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles were already released.
Plot
At a train station in the northern part of the game's backstory, a new railroad station is constructed. Although the construction of this station is funded by the governor of this town, the company that built this new railroad line are secret service agents of the Galactic Federation. In addition, the company is working secretly in a city called "Northeast America".
The story begins with a young boy named, whose friend, Sonic, is trapped inside a book. Sonic appears to be wearing a blue tunic and is traveling from kingdom to kingdom, searching for the. Upon arriving at the king's palace, Sonic is captured by some of the king's guards. He is then taken to an interrogation room where he meets the governor and the queen. The queen explains to the governor that he used a sword to defeat a good number of the guards.
Sonic asks for the governor to explain to him what happened. The governor introduces himself as Mr., who is a representative of the Galactic Federation. Mr. tells Sonic that he is the first in history to defeat the agents, and that he has been sent to collect the bounty on Sonic. He also states that if Sonic is captured again, Mr. will send the Earthmen to this planet to become slaves. The next day, Sonic wakes up in a jail cell, along with a bunch of robots. The robots then inform Sonic that they are taking him to the Galactic Federation.
Sonic escapes and reaches the headquarters of the Galactic Federation. The commander of the operation then informs Sonic that he will be part of a special group of men. Sonic declines and threatens to kill himself by jumping off of a cliff. However, when the commander gives Sonic a choice, Sonic goes through with the plan.
