What is Fiqh? Fiqh (pronounced: fee-kheh) is the Islamic equivalent of Sharia and Halal. Simply put, it means 'understanding'. Muslims can also refer to it as Islamic jurisprudence. Fiqh answers questions related to all aspects of life – from worship and law to diet and fashion – for Muslims who want to practice their religion, or Muslims who want an ethical way of life. Fiqh is the body of Islamic law that is determined by ijtihad, which means 'independent reasoning'.To explain this concept further, let us look at an analogy. Imagine you are on a water-skiing holiday. You are given a book of rules to follow. These are common sense guidelines, so you don't need to re-read them every time you go for a ride. But if you went too far away from the road on your first day out, then after reading the book of rules, there may be no-go areas that will put you in danger if you return there or enter it again. The book may not provide enough flexibility to allow for all possible situations. Fiqh is the equivalent of the rules, but it also has a safety net which allows for different situations to be dealt with. Fiqh allows for interpretation of the rules in light of all relevant information, and will often give precedence to certain rulings if they are more beneficial or more consistent with other rulings. The Fiqh issue must also be studied in conjunction with another issue which is translated as 'Advice' or 'ommiyyat' in Arabic, because it deals with the subject of jurisprudence and its laws. This Advise issue deals with matters such as religious matters and their execution. This is the most important of all issues in Islamic Fiqh. So it is necessary to know this issue in order to fully understand Islamic Fiqh Fiqh (jurisprudence) is one of the most controversial aspects of Islam. Many Muslims are not aware or do not fully understand what fiqh is about. It has become more controversial because non-Muslims often misunderstand some commands within fiqh and believe that these are part of Islam when in fact, they are not.
